Why the network sets your date, not the hardware

Worth knowing

Western Power runs the network that serves Perth and regional WA, and an electrical contractor installing charging equipment has to stay within the capacity of the connection the site already has. A depot that wants more than that is not a bigger install, it is an application to the network.

That is where a two week job becomes a two month one, and it is the reason we start with your run sheet. If the overnight window is long enough to share the supply you already hold, the network never enters the schedule at all.

How many chargers does a depot actually need?

Usually fewer than the number of vehicles. If the vehicles sit for eight hours and only need four, one charger can serve two vehicles in sequence. We work that out from your run sheet at the site visit.

How long does a depot installation take?

Between two weeks and two months. AC banks on an existing supply are at the fast end. Larger DC units, or anything needing new civil works, are at the slow end.

The vans come back at different times. Does that break it?

It is usually what makes it work. Staggered arrivals mean the load spreads itself, and a charger that has finished with one vehicle is free for the next. We model the actual arrival spread rather than assuming everything lands at once.

Do we need DC at the depot?

Only if something has to turn around inside the day. If the vehicles sit overnight, DC is money spent on speed you cannot use. Most depots we do are AC with one DC unit for the exception.

Can we see whether a vehicle actually charged?

Yes. Each session records the vehicle or the driver, the start and finish times and the energy delivered, so a van that did not charge is visible before the shift rather than after it.

What happens if the depot loses power overnight?

The chargers resume when supply returns, and the session log shows the gap. If the fleet cannot absorb a lost night, that is a conversation about backup, and it belongs in the design rather than after the first outage.

Can we add bays as the fleet grows?

That is what the design is for. We size the backbone and the conduit for where the fleet is heading, so later bays are an addition rather than opening the yard a second time.

Does the workshop load affect the charging?

It can, and it should. The building's own demand takes priority and the charging absorbs what is left. That is the whole point of load management on a depot: the site never trips because someone put a van on charge.
