Where we work
What the wiring rules require of a workplace bay
Worth knowing
EV charging installations in Australia are covered by Appendix P of AS/NZS 3000:2018, the wiring rules. Every charging point takes its own final subcircuit, with its own overcurrent protection and its own RCD, which is why a bank of workplace bays is not a matter of adding outlets to the carpark circuit that is already there.
The RCD type is decided by the charger, not by preference. A Type A device is only acceptable where the unit itself detects DC leakage and disconnects; where it does not, the circuit needs a Type B. It is worth asking any quote which of the two it has allowed for, because the difference is real money per bay.

Workplace charging questions
Questions
Tap a question to open it.
01Can we recover the cost of staff charging?
Yes. Every session records the user, the time and the energy used, so the charging can be reported and recovered or salary packaged. How you treat it is a question for your accountant, not for us.
02Do we need a power upgrade for workplace charging?
Often not. Most sites have enough supply if the chargers share it intelligently. We check what your site can carry at the site visit, before any hardware is quoted.
03How many bays do we need for our staff?
Fewer than the number of EVs, almost always. A car parked for nine hours and needing three can share a charger with the car beside it. We work the number out from your headcount and your parking pattern, not from a rule of thumb.
04Can visitors and clients use them as well?
Yes, and it is worth deciding before the units go in. Access can be open to anyone, limited to staff cards, or open to visitors at a different rate. Changing it later is a settings job, not an electrical one.
05What stops someone leaving their car plugged in all day?
Session data shows who is connected and for how long, so most workplaces solve it with an email rather than hardware. Where it needs enforcing, an idle fee after the charge completes does it.
06Do the chargers need their own meter?
Not usually. The software records energy per session, which is what you need for reporting or recovery. A separate meter is only worth it if a landlord or a tenancy agreement requires the split at the board.
07We lease the building. Does that change anything?
It changes who you have to ask, not what gets installed. Landlords generally want to know where the cable runs, what happens at make good, and who owns the equipment at the end. We put those in the proposal so you can hand it straight to them.
08Can it work with a salary packaged or novated vehicle?
The charging side can, because every session is attributed to a user with the energy recorded. How that is treated for packaging is a question for your provider and your accountant, and the session data is what they will ask you for.
